open call

I did a project called 'Open Call' where I was asked to respond to a brief given by Gwent Arts in Health which focused on the NHS and the future of healthcare (for more information about the project follow the link: gARTh). The artwork is currently displayed at St Woolos Hospital in Newport, the exhibition is called Narratives of Care, and on completion of the project there was a celebration to unveil the the works produced.

This piece is inspired by my mother’s experience of breaking her femur at the age of nine and the treatment she received from the Royal Gwent Hospital is a narrative of how the treatment for a broken femur has changed since the beginning of the NHS. I was especially interested in how visitation has changed over the past 70 years, beginning with parents only being allowed to visit their children during limited times, then allowing parents to stay with their children 24/7 and now allowing children to go home and recover in their family environment. These changes in visitation are shown by the presence of furniture in the piece.
